After graduating from PIFD, Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design, Zarmisha Dar delved into designing and soon created a name for herself. With a penchant for perfection and excellence, Dar has shown many innovative designs on the ramp. She has a strong sense of style and explores interesting techniques to present a new design for her clientele. Her debut collection was shown at PLBW 2015.
In her interview with Fashion Collection, she unveils her persona and talks about style and fashion.
Fashion Collection: Why did you decide to choose fashion designing as a career?
Zarmisha Dar: Fashion is something that has always excited me. Even as a child I loved going to bazaars with my mother observing different fabrics and clothes. I knew from the very beginning that I wanted fashion designing as a career.
Fashion Collection: Say something about your background?
Zarmisha Dar: I did my schooling – O & A levels from Lahore Grammarand then did a 4 year degree programme from Pakistan Institute of Fashion & Design.
Fashion Collection: What according to you is a favourite part of being a fashion designer?
Zarmisha Dar: In my opinion, it would be capturing peoples’ imagination and then translating them into clothes. It’s a glamorous business and also very visual.
Fashion Collection: The designs you created are no doubt good enough, but who and which things were your inspiration while creating such designs?
Zarmisha Dar: My brand is all about the celebration of femininity, colour, elegance, glamour, functionality and individuality. My philosophy is to constantly invite and stay within the boundaries of eastern attire.
Fashion Collection: Define fashion?
Zarmisha Dar: Fashion is all about expressing your identity, using your clothes and fashion choices to tell people something about you.
Fashion Collection: What skills according to you are necessary for a successful fashion designer?
Zarmisha Dar: You need a great sense of style and the ability to constantly come up with new and innovative ideas, sense of competition, good communication, knowledge of current fashion trends, strong visualisation ability and the ability to work under pressure.
Fashion Collection: How do you stay up to date regarding fashion?
Zarmisha Dar: Usually through social media and browsing through magazines.
Fashion Collection: What do you think about work ethics and what kind of ethics you believe in following while working with fashion?
Zarmisha Dar: Originality – your products and ideas must be original and there should be no infringement of the work of other designers.
Fashion Collection: What do you consider the important facets of the fashion industry?
Zarmisha Dar: Creativity, innovation, thinking out of the box.
Fashion Collection: What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
Zarmisha Dar: I am a hard worker, punctual, team player. My weakness would be that I am too critical of myself.
Fashion Collection: How would you describe your personal style?
Zarmisha Dar: My style is always evolving, trying to assign a label to it is difficult even for me.
Fashion Collection: How do you handle stress?
Zarmisha Dar: When I am under stress, I come up with some of my most creative work. I focus and get the job done rather than stressing out.
